The British Museum, together with the Legacy Restoration Trust (LRT) and Adjaye Associates announced a major new archaeology project on November 13. The new project will investigate the archaeology of the Kingdom of Benin and construct a new museum – Edo Museum of West African Art (EMOWAA) – above the archaeological remains.
The project, namely the EMOWAA Archaeology Project, has so far secured the equivalent of four million (U.S. dollars) of funding sponsored by the LRT and gained support from local government, according to the British Museum. The design agency Adjaye Associates is appointed to undertake the initial concept and urban planning work on the EMOWAA.
The new museum will devote in reuniting Benin art works currently within international collections, as well as investigating and presenting the wider histories that these works represent.
