According to the Hermitage Museum Press Office, during the New Year's holiday, the museum will launch an array of online programs through its official social network. Visitors can watch the holiday video about Christmas and New Year in Winter Palace in the 18-19th Century, the film about Empress Catherine II and Kazan and many programs for children. They can also pay an online visit to the museum's recently opened special exhibitions After Raphael·1520-2020 and Faberge — Jeweller to the Imperial Court.
According to a decree issued by the government of St. Petersburg dated December 2, the Hermitage Museum will be temporarily closed from December 30 to January 10 next year. Previously the museum director Mikhail Borisovich Piotrowski announced that the number of visitors to the Hermitage Museum had slumped by 80% due to the quarantine measures under the pandemic. The museum received 4.9 million visitors in 2019. In 2020, it has only received 836 thousand visitors, but the number of online visitors has increased to 70 million.
