Digital Protection Project Initiated for Grotto Temples on the Silk Road

Before and After: Digital Restoration of a Guanyin Bodhisattva statue in Longmen Grotto

On September 26, the opening ceremony of Digital Rebirth: Digital Protection Program for Grotto Temples along the Silk Road was held at Yungang Grottoes in Datong, Shanxi Province. The ceremony was hosted by the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation, Shanxi Provincial Cultural Heritage Administration and Datong People's Government, and was organized by Yungang Grottoes Research Institute.

The project covers grottoes from different eras and regions along the Silk Road, exploring cave digitization, virtual restoration, digital return, exhibition and display as well as public education. It is hoped that through this project, a model can be set for the digital protection of cave temples. By utilizing modern technology, the precious culture relics can be better conserved and therefore shine more brightly in the new era.

The project is a long-term one, with Yungang Grottoes, Longmen Grottoes and Maiji Mountain Grottoes as the first batch for collaboration, according to the foundation.
